Dinwiddie Preserve is located in Fallbrook. Fallbrook is a rural community in northern San Diego. Early inhabitants of the region are the Payomkawichum people, who later would be known as the Luiseños by the Spanish missionaries.  Learn more about their history and how to support them here.

Presently, the the preserve is named after Nancy and Howard Dinwiddie, who purchased the 14.5 acre property and turned it into a preserve. Just a few hundred yards past the Fallbrook High School on Stagecoach Ln and across the street from Palomares House.

Purchased in 1994, the preserve has meadows, trees and a year-round stream known as Cienega Creek.

Dinwiddie has had extensive habitat restoration, removing invasive species and replacing them with native trees and shrubs. Oak, willow, and sycamore surround open fields and are popular with birds.

Personal Experience: This trail is right across from one of the oldest homes in Fallbrook, the Palomares House. Make sure to check it out if you head out here. We explored this area in summer. Despite it being one of the driest times of the year, this area still thrived with greenery, magic and beauty. Although a small hike, it is packed with beauty.

While you’re in the area, make sure to check out Los Jilgueros Preserve nearby!

This is a rather brief hike, with no incline. I would love to see it on a foggy morning. It seemed like the perfect setting to see wild horses running freely, if only that were possible here in San Diego!

Wild rose!
