If you follow my posts, you will know that I'm big on holistic healing and giving our bodies the tools needed to regenerate and fight toxic buildup. I like to regularly float in epsom salts and partake in community acupuncture, for instance.  A newer form of healing that I was recently tipped off to was cryotherapy.

It sounds insane to willingly do this, but cryotherapy involves going inside a chamber of freezing cold air that averages around -150°. You then stand in the icy chamber for 3-5 minutes.  Sound crazy? It's actually not!  Let's learn why many athletes and people suffering with inflammation love this method and how it can help you too!

How Does Cryotherapy Work?

Cryotherapy helps heal the body's inflammation by pulling blood away from your extremities by using extreme cold for a short duration of time.

During that time, blood rushes to your internal organs and provides them with an abundance of oxygen, endorphins and enzymes. Once your blood returns to your tissues, it focuses on reducing inflammation and pain in the body.

History of Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is actually not a new concept at all.  The Egyptians used to heal injuries with cold treatments knowing it reduced inflammation. In many, if not all, cultures it has always been a common practice to put wrapped ice on a fresh injury to bring the swelling down. In 400 BC, Hippocrates wrote about using cold therapy to reduce swelling.

In 1050 AD, Anglo-Saxon Monks would use cold treatments as a local anesthetic. From 1845 to 1851, Dr. James Arnott wrote about using cold treatment for headaches and neuralgia. He would also use a freezing solution of salt and ice to freeze tumors.

He noted that the method would not only ease the patient's pain but shrunk the tumor. In 1907 Dr. Whitehouse described the beneficial effects cryotherapy had on fifteen types of skin cancer.

After World War II, liquid nitrogen went on the market and was used clinically to treat various skin diseases.  In 1978, a Japanese doctor created Whole Body Cryotherapy to treat the pain from rheumatoid arthritis on his patients.

Further research led to the development of full cryogenic chambers. Present day, cryo chambers are becoming more mainstream as the healing effects are powerful, tried and true.

Harper’s Bazaar recently called cryotherapy “the frozen answer to beauty perfection.”  There is a beauty trend called cryofacial which is usually a hose shooting freezing cold air on your face to increase circulation and collagen growth.  Here's a cute video about cryofacials and the benefits of them. I learned at Chill N Out Cryotherapy that when you're in their chamber, use the fan they offer on your face and you're instantly getting a cryofacial!

Infrared Sauna

So what makes this place so special is that they have MULTIPLE healing rooms beyond just cryotherapy!  They recommend doing all three treatments in the same day, which is known as a trifecta.  This will give you ultimate healing. So the next room is their red light infrared sauna.  I already did a ton of research into what these amazing saunas do which can be read here.

But here is a quick breakdown of what infrared saunas do for you:

Red Light Therapy

The last treatment of the 3 part healing is their LightSim Red Light Therapy.  I had never heard of this treatment before but am now all about it!  This treatment is FDA-cleared and included deep infrared, red light wavelengths.

How red light therapy works is through wavelengths which are delivered to your skin and cells. The light creates a reaction in the mitochondria which leads to stimulation of the body's production of ATP, which is our body's main fuel source.  This in turn helps to restore proper cell function.
